AF-S 18-200 VR II lens launched

18200VR2 In today’s slew of announcements from Nikon, they have also launched a replacement for the popular 18-200 VR DX lens.

Although the optical formula remains unchanged from the original, this new version adds a zoom lock switch to help prevent “zoom creep” – a common complain from users of the original.  The lens also gains a new lens coating to minimize ghosting and flare.

I would have hoped a change in the optical formula, too, to correct chromatic aberration which is quite pronounced at the wide angle end.
Have Version 1, which I sent back to Nikon service for what I considered definitely unacceptable chromatic aberration. It came back with a statement that it was within specs. Well, if it was then Nikon has much more forgiving specs than one would expect from that brand.
