AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Review:
Specifications and Comparison

Navigate:

That target market for this lens in an interesting question. Over the past few years, Nikon have launched a slew of DX "standard" zooms. First came the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 around the time of the D70. More recently, there has been the 18-55mm in various VR and non-VR forms, the 18-105mm VR, 18-135mm and finally 18-200mm VR. In other words, the consumer is spoilt for choice in this range.

The other issue is that many, if not most, users of at least the lower-end DX DSLRs will have received their camera in a kit with one of the above. So, does this lens offer enough to persuade people to buy it, perhaps if they already have one of the above?

To start, let's compare this lens to it's Nikkor competitors.

The difference between these two lenses becomes a little clearer after looking at the table above. Not only does the 16-85mm extend the zoom range usefully at both the wide and long ends, but physically it's a much more solid item. It weighs in at 220g heavier than the kit lens - that's an extra 83% - due to both the increase in the size and number of elements and the more solid construction.

In truth, these lenses are worlds apart in terms of construction - as is evidenced by the price tag alone. The 16-85mm has metal extending lens barrels, a metal mount, and just feels way more "solid" than the 18-55m. Not only that, but it allows the fitting of a lens hood (the 18-55mm is not supplied with a hood, and in fact there is no way to attach one), has both "Normal" and "Active" VR modes, full-time manual focus override, in addition to the extra zoom range.
